To best serve you, our team has put together some of the most commonly asked questions we hear from women asking about the Abortion Pill.

What is the abortion pill?

Contrary to its name, the abortion pill is not just a single pill. It consists of two separate medications taken in sequence. The abortion pill is often referred to as “medical abortion” or “medication abortion”. The abortion pill is different from emergency contraception pills (sometimes referred to as “the morning-after pill”), which are used to prevent a potential pregnancy after unprotected sex.

When can I take the abortion pill?

The abortion pill procedure is typically available within the first 10 weeks and 6 days after the start of your last menstrual period (LMP).

If you’re more than 11 weeks pregnant, JMJ can provide answers to your questions regarding second-trimester or late-term abortion methods, as well as offer information and resources for exploring other pregnancy options.

How does the abortion pill work?

The abortion pill uses two medications, which are taken separately. The initial pill is taken to block the progesterone hormone, which is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. This causes the cervix to soften, allowing for easy passage of the second pill. The second pill induces early labor, leading to contractions, cramping, and bleeding. Typically within a few hours of taking it, this pill begins to expel the embryo and pregnancy tissues from the uterus.

In some cases, both medications may be taken in a single dose or split into two doses, spaced 24-48 hours apart. It is often recommended to have a follow-up appointment or ultrasound to ensure that all the pregnancy tissue has been expelled.

The entire process generally takes about two weeks to complete, although the duration may vary depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Is the abortion pill safe?

It is not safe to take the abortion pill until you have ruled out an ectopic pregnancy which is why a free ultrasound at our center is a great first step for you as you make your decision. Based on what has been reported, the risk of death after taking the abortion pill is small, but as with any medical procedure complications can happen, including those listed below. It is important to note that many physicians advise against taking the abortion pill at home without having on-site medical supervision.

What are the side effects of the abortion pill?

The abortion pill may cause side effects similar to a miscarriage and typically lasts about two weeks. Some of the more common side effects include:
