Why Do I need an Ultrasound Before My Abortion?

Why do I need an ultrasound before an abortion?

If you think you might be pregnant and are wondering about abortion care, one question on your mind might be — “Do I need an ultrasound first?” An ultrasound is an important first step in guaranteeing you are fully informed to make the safest decision for your body.

What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a safe medical scan that uses sound waves to project an image and show what’s happening inside your uterus. It doesn’t involve any radiation or further risks, and gives you and your doctor vital information about the pregnancy.

Is an Ultrasound Required by Florida Law?

There are specific state laws in Florida related to abortion. These laws pertain to ultrasounds and informed consent. Before an abortion is performed, Florida law says a woman must be given specific information, including:

  • The estimated gestational age of the fetus, which must be verified by an ultrasound;
  • An opportunity to view the live ultrasound images and hear an explanation of them if she chooses — this can be declined by the patient.

The law also states that the ultrasound must be done by a qualified person, and if a woman declines to view the images, she must sign a form saying she declined of her own free will. This doesn’t mean every abortion patient is forced to view the ultrasound — it means the law gives you a choice to view or not view the images, and you must be informed in person. However the ultrasound itself is required to proceed with any further abortion scheduling.

Why Doctors Recommend an Ultrasound

  1. It shows how far along you are

Different types of abortion are safe at different stages in pregnancy. An ultrasound provides the most accurate timeline of how many weeks along you are. This matters because of the type of care available to you at each stage. Whether a medical or surgical abortion is an option for you highly depends on your pregnancy's gestational age.

  1. It confirms the pregnancies location

Most pregnancies grow inside the uterus. But, in some cases can develop outside the uterus — this is called an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy can become life threatening if not treated, which is why an ultrasound is a vital tool to rule this out before any procedure.

  1. It shows pregnancy development

Sometimes miscarriages happen early, and an ultrasound can show whether a pregnancy is developing normally. That information might influence your next steps as you think through your options.

Your Health Comes First

If you’re considering abortion care, an ultrasound doesn’t force you to choose one option or another, it simply gives you the facts you need to decide what’s right for you.

An ultrasound before abortion care isn’t just a “requirement” — it’s a chance to understand your body and your pregnancy before moving forward. You have a voice in your care, and you have the right to make decisions that protect your health and your future.
